Phase 2 of Strand Seawall upgrade will commence this year

The City would like to advise residents that although initial communication indicated that Phase two of the Strand seawall upgrade was to commence in October 2024, there have been delays with the issuing of the construction works permit. The works have been rescheduled to start on the ground by the end of November 2024, if all goes according to plan. Read more below:
The second phase of the Strand Seawall upgrade and refurbishment project involves the construction of an upgraded seawall, universally accessible promenade, beach access points, associated infrastructure and traffic calming measures along Beach Road. This Phase two project starts at the Strand Pavilion building and ends at Greenways. The planned work is similar to that of Phase one of the project that has already been completed between Da Gama Street and the Strand Pavilion.
The project scope will be completed in five phases, starting at the Strand Pavilion side, working toward Greenways Estate in the east, where each phase has an average duration of five months. The project is expected to be completed by November 2026. Beach access will remain open during the construction, but will, however, temporarily be limited in the work stage areas and the location will change as the project progresses.
‘We envisage minimal interruption to road traffic and plan to open up as many road and pedestrian walkways as possible to further reduce the temporary impact. We assure the public that all affected residents and buildings will be provided with continuous access to their properties and will be notified of any changes if they occur. Pedestrians will also have a temporal corridor walkway during each phase, which will be roughly 200 metres. Once completed, the project will feature the same sleek look as with the Strand Seawall Phase one project,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Traffic will be managed by the contractor’s traffic management plan, which includes a stop/go system that will be put in place along the affected portion of Beach Road while works are under way on the promenade, road and seawall. A stop/go system will also be in place during the construction of the raised intersections. The location of the stop/go systems will depend on the stage of construction.
Residents can expect construction equipment typical for this scale of project on site, which will include a crawler crane; excavators; dewatering equipment; road construction machines as well as flatbed deliver and tipper trucks. The works will be monitored closely by site engineers to ensure all technical; environmental and health and safety specifications are adhered to.
